[By St. Cn.un.] The winter racing commenced in Canterbury with the Ashburton Racing Club’s fixture, but was very sparsely attended, and the totalisator turnover was £2,242 down on last year’s figures. The track, after recent rains, was in good winter order, but not fast. The feature of the meeting was the Washdyke trainer’s successes, winning three races—the two open events with Water Power, and the Trial Stakes with Elgindale. The last-named and the winner of the next race, Haere Tonu, were the only first favourites to score during the afternoon. Owing to the club’s usual starter, A. J. Hastings, being engaged at the Wellington Trotting Meeting, R. E. Hatch, of Palmerston North, was in charge of the barrier, and, excepting in the Flying Handicap, did good work. * * * * CoJossian (£102), Imperial Spear (£93)), Grand Review (£53), and Bright Shade (£SO) were the best backed for the Longbeach Handicap, a high-weight handicap. From an even start Eupator, Imperial Spear, Grand Review, and Brown Pearl were the early leaders, and they led across the top. Eupator was joined by Brown Pearl at the turn for home, and this pair were followed by Imperial Spear, Grand Review, Colossian, and Drumfire. Brown Pearl and Eupator were still in charge at the distance, then Drumfire and Colossian joined them, and in a fine finish Drumfire prevailed by a head from Colossian, ’who beat Eupator by a similar margin, and Brown Pearl and Grand Review were only necks away. The winner, by Winning Hit from Scrimmage, had only £ls 10s invested on his chance. * -f * * In a field of twenty-one for the Selma Harness Trot, the best hacked were Wild Dreams (£146)), Adsnm, by Nelson Derby—Wildwood mare (£104), Interlude—lronside bracket (£971), Mystery Yet (£85)), and Cam Dillon (£6S)j. The favourite and Overtime were slow to move off. and Adsnm led through the straight from Cam Dillon. Secret Service. Guardsman, and .Malvena, Adsum was closely followed along the hack by Cam Dillon, this pair being well clear from Malvena. This order was not changed racing round the far turn and across the top. Adsum was first into the straight from Wild Dreams, Cam Dillon, Malvena, and llealeon. Adsum drew out from the distance post and won comfortably by three lengths from Ironside, who finished very fast and heat Cam Dillon by four lengths. Wild Dreams, Malvena, and Doris Derby were next. * * * * For the Autumn Handicap Davolo (£241) and Water Power, by Tractor —Charybdis (£135) were the best backed. Wise Choice led Cleaner and Chrysology for about half a mile, then she began to drift, and Chrysology carried on the lead from Gleaner round the far turn, the favourite running into second place three •furlongs from home, where Water Power was last. Just after turning for home Davolo headed Chrysology, and appeared to have the race in hand at the distance, hut Water Power put in one of her charactristic runs and beat him easily by a length and a-half. Cleaner was three lon nibs away third, with Chrysology and Wise Choice next. * * * * Klgimlale. by Shambles—Baclvelor’s I’ictnro (£130)), Silk Arrow (£123)),

Capital (£117). Lowater (£96]), and Wild Sky (£s6]) wore the best backed for the Trial Stakes. Moonbeam and Silk Arrow were first out from Elgindale, Red Arrow, and Tuirau. Moonbeam was just shading Elgindale as they turned into the straight in front of Silk Arrow, Capital, Tuirau, and Wild Sky. Elgindale joined Moonbeam inside the distance, and in the run home beat her by a short length. Silk Arrow was three-quarters of a length away third with Tuirau, Wild Sky, and Capital next. * * * * Haere Tonu by Hunting Song— Martianathe (£los]), Red Dance (£BS), Tout le Monde (£B2), Star Raider (£7B), and Sibella (£s2]) were the best backed in the Fairfield Hack Handicap. Maroha and Grand Review led out from Haere Tonu and High Rank, and after going three furlongs Maroha and Rebel Chief were racing four lengths clear of Grand Review, Haere Tonu, and High Rank. There was no change rounding across the far turn, but racing across the top the field closed up. Maroha was first into the straight from Hebei Chief, Haere Tonu. Silver Sight, Sibella and Red Dance. Before reaching the distance the favourite had taken charge, and easily holding off Grand Review, beat her by a length and a half. Red Dance was three lengths off third, with Air Pocket, Sibella, and Star Raider were next. * * * ♦ Royal Amphora (£159), Hurlingham (£139), Final Shot (£137)), and Water Power penalised (£124)) were the best fancied in the Flying Handicap. From a bad start Royal Amphora and Hurlingham led out from Martian Chief. At the end of a furlong and a-half Royal Amphora ran to the front and led Hurlingham, Martian Chief, and Water Power across the top. Royal Amphora was first into the straight, and followed by Martian Chief, Hurlingham, and Water Power, Royal Amphora was well clear at the distance, hut Water Power cut him down over the last 100yds and beat him half a length. Hurlingham was three lengths away third, with Metal Bird and Martian Chief next. * * * * Imposter (£263), Llewellyirs Pride by Llewellyn—Molly Pointer (£151), Sky Wink (£126)), Thornworthy (£108), and the Modern Lady—Garry Thorpe bracket (£94) were the best fancied for the Rakaia Trot Handicap. Sky Wink lost bis chance at the start, and Thornworthy Jed out from Llewellyn’s Pride and the favourite, who was a little slow to move off. After running two furlongs, Llewellyn’s Pride took charge, and Imposter ran into second place. They were followed along the back and into the straight by Modern Lady, Tollgate, and Harvestin. Llewellyn’s Pride held his advantage in the run home, and beat Imposter by half a length. Harvestin was three lengths away third, followed by Tollgate, Modern Lady, and Thornworthy.
