FITNESS FOR WORK Advice has been received by tho City Council’s Works Committee from the certifying officer, Government Employment‘Bureau, to the effect that it was tho experience of the Unemployment Board that in some cases men had been classified as fit for light work, making them a charge on the unemployment fund, where their infirmity was such that even in normal times they would be unable to obtain and hold any kind of position. It had been agreed, therefore, to set up in each centre a tribunal to which such cases might be referred for a decision as to , their status. ■ It had now been decided to set up such a • body in Dunedin, to cf one representative of the Hospital Board (not the medical examiner), one representative ■ of tho Unemployment Board, and one representative of the City Council. The committee recommends that the chairman (Cr J. J. Marlow) be appointed as tho council s representative on this body. CITY COUNCIL WORKS Consideration has been given by the Works Committee to the matter of widening portion of Crosby street where land has already been acquired for the purpose, and the committee recommends that authority be given for this work to be put in hand, utilising relief labour. Tho estimated cost to the council is’£B2, and the work is expected to employ ten relief workers and a ganger for about three weeks. Authority has been given for widening a bend at the foot of Driver’s road near its intersection with Queen’s drive. The easing of this bend has been kept Li vjow for some time, and a considerable amount of filling has been _ deposited over the site from time to time. The estimated cost to the _ council of carrying out the work } utilising relief labour, is £llß.
