MR BERNARD SHAW
RETURN TO ENGLAND. CHARACTERISTIC COMMENTS Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyrighl LONDON, May 17, (Received May 18, at 11.10 a.m.) Mr Bernard Shaw, who arrived by the Rangitane, in response to an invitation by journalists to express an opinion on the test matches, said: “ They are ridiculous things, which will break up the Empire. They induce antagonism and rivalry, and distract the serious attention of the people from politics. Everywhere you go in most parts of the world you see grownups and children kicking a football. You never see it in New Zealand, which is proof of enlightenment in New Zealand, where the people- are more civilised, better looking, and better mannered than in England. I found intense loyalty in New Zealand to the Empire. I don’t blame them for wanting all they can get.”
