[Ptn UHirst) Pkbw Associstiox.]
AUCKLAND, May 18. Monev in cake may constitute a lottery in New Zealand, according to a decision at the Magistrate’s Court today, when Hollis William Reid was charged with establishing a lottery. A firm of cake manufacturers recently circularised agents notifying them that over 1,500 silver pieces were to be placed in cake. A detective inade inquiries, and in one piece in a _ shop window saw fourteen threepenny pieces. He went inside and purchased a small piece for 4d, and in it was one threepenny piece. _ Counsel for defendant, who pleaded guilty, said the offence was technical and venial. The scheme was a means of advertising, and was perfectly genuine, but a rival of the_ firm must have complained to the police. The Magistrate fined defendant £2 and costs.-
