STILL A MYSTERY
THE RUMOURED PLANE CRASH SEARCH CONTINUED [Per United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL. May 17. Mystery still surrounds the reported crash of an aeroplane in the mountainous country near Skippers yesterday morning. Official inquiries have been made from aerodromes all over the dominion, but all machines can be accounted for, and it is considered unlikely that a pilot would undertake a flight over such high and dangerous country in the stormy conditions prevailing during the past few days. Nevertheless, opinion near where the plane is stated to have been,seen appears to be that a crash actually did occur, although the possibility of all optical illusion produced by clouds has been suggested. The Invercargill police communicated with the post master at Long Gully this morning, and ho stated that he was satisfied that an aeroplane had actually been seen and proposed assisting in a search this afternoon. A report from Queenstown this evening stated that the search party had returned, but had found no trace of an aeroplane. The search was hampered by heavy falls of snow. It will be continued to-morrow.
