THE POSITION IN AUCKLAND EHOUfiH MEN T 3 FILL ALL CAMP VACANCIES [Per Unitbd Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 17. There are 753 vacancies for men in all classes of country camps in Auckland province. The total nunibej? of men on sustenance in Auckland is 810. These facts were ascertained in inquiries following the announcement that from next Monday full sustenance rates, instead of half-rates, will be paid to relief workers for whom no suitable and approved work can be found in town or country. The payment of full sustenance to the men eligible for it will continue throughout the winter. Men for whom no work can be found will thus be placed on the same footing as those who have elected to accept sustenance. A Labour Department officer (Mr Slaughter) said there were almost sufficient men on sustenance in Auckland to fill the country camp vacancies. The department and the local bodies had gone to considerable expensh in equipping the camps, and they, had been more than surprised at the lack of response by the men. Not all the men on sustenance were fit for camp, imt if the fit men in the city would go to the country their departure would leave available for nlany men now; on sustenance suitable and approved work which they could perform in the city.
