IMPROVEMENT OF CREMATORIUM AREA SUGGESTIONS BY AMENITIES SOCIETY Proposals for the beautification uud the provision of shelter of the windswept site of the crematorium at Lawyer’s Head, adjoining the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery, were discussed by the Dunedin Amenities Society last night. Reporting on an inspection of the crematorium area with Mr R. Fountain, Mr George Simpson said the subcommittee was of the opinion that the whole of the area available should be planted in ngaios, to ho cut away later to make way for glades or garden plots. Six acres could be planted, while the quarry site could he improved hy alpine plants. Mr Tannock said that four acres at most would be available for ngaios, which would grow naturally in the locality. About 5,000 plants woidd he required. Mr John Wilson said lie was very interested, after the Domain Board’s experiment, to see how the plants would grow. . * Mr Tannock pointed out that the quarry site could not be placed under the improvement scheme for some time, as it was providing material for paths. A decision was made to request the City Council to plant approximately four acres in ngaios. Mr C. M. Benzoin said a proposal had been made to call for designs for beautifying the area. “ There will be no need to call for designs within the next ten years, until shelter is given by the ngaios,” replied Mr Tannock. Air Benzoin was added to the subcommittee. The Chairman said a suggestion had been made that Virginian creepers he placed, against the building. It was decided to request the corporation to plant, the creepers on the north side of the building.
