Mr !’. M/Skimniing, M.P., came lo Dunedin by the south express this morning. Captain A. Lansley, of the Marino Department, who has been ship’s surveyor in Dunedin for three years, is on six mouths’ leave of absence, and left this morning for London with his wife and family. Mr and Mrs E. Oswald Reilly went north this morning to embark on tho Rotorua for England. They arc planning to return in about four months.Mr Andrew M'Kinnon left for Sydney this morning. Mr .1. H. Duncan was a passenger for Wellington by the 11.35 train today, Mr G. Porter was amongst the passengers for Wellington by the express to-day. Mr L. D.. Woolf left by car this morning for Christchurch. Miss H. fil. Jeans, who has been studying diatetics in London, returned to New Zealand by the Romuera. Mr J. Renfrew White has been' elected chairman of the honorary medical staff at Dunedin Hospital for the current year. Mr K. G. V. Hudson, astronomer, was honoured at Wellington last night by the Royal Society of New Zealand, and was presented with the special Sidey _ Medal and cheque for his work on behalf of science. Rex King, a prominent Canterbury Rugby forward, and a member of the 1931 ’Varsity team that toured Australia, will leave for England next month to continue his studies as a school teacher (says a Christchurch Press Association telegram). Mr John Masefield, Poet Laureate,has accepted an invitation to be present at the Melbourne centenary celebrations. A London Press Association cablegram states that Mr Forgan Smith, the Queensland Premier, had an audience with the King for half an hour. A Press Association cable message from Sydney states that the Rev. Joseph Lundie has been elected Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New South Wales. Ho is a former moderator of Queensland. A Christchurch Press Association telegram announces the death of Captain Robert Kirk, aged ninety, formerly well known in tho coastal trade. He spent his early days in Dunedin, and later wont to Nelson. At one time he owned the schooner John Bell, which was wrecked near Wellington. The, death of Mr J. C. Stephens was a. subject of reference at the monthly meeting of the High Schools’ Board yesterday afternoon. The following resolution was carried, members standing in silence;—“The board desires to record its sense of the loss sustained by the _ educational interests of this community in the removal of one who served them so long and so ably. In particular the board mourns the loss of one of its oldest and most prominent members. As representative on the board of the parents of High School pupils Mr Stephens joined the board in 1915, and was its chairman in. 1931.For nineteen years he gave devoted service to the institutions under the hoard’s control. His legal training, his alertness of mind, his wide knowledge of affairs, and his unswerving conscientiousness gave him an outstanding position on the board, which will long remember the value of the work he performed. His geniality of disposition and ’ his unfailing tact smoothed out every discussion, and the unique power he possessed of rapidly drafting difficult resolutions was invaluable for the facilitation of business. In the varied departments of the board’s activities—educational, financial, and the control of endowments —it would he difficult to overestimate the service which fill* Stephens performed. The interests of the parents whom ho represented found in him a ready and enthusiastic advocate. His long continued educational work on this and other educational bodies had given him a wide experience and a sound judgment on educational policy. He will be long missed from the board’s council table, where his personal qualities endeared him to every member, and where he will be mourned by every member as a friend.
