MISS KAY BEATEN IN FIRST ROUND WW FM MISS GMSFfIRD Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 14. ■ (Received May 15, at 10 a.m.) In the first round of the .women’s championship Mrs Holm defeated Miss Oliver Kay, 6 and 5. Miss Kay was bewildered by the storm and. the unfamiliar conditions. Airs Holm, who is used to windswept courses, dominated the play. She lost only the twelfth hole, when she missed a short putt for a half. Miss Gaisford defeated Mrs Garon, 1 up. Airs Jacobsen defeated Miss Gourlay, 1 up. Mrs Jacobsen’s victory was a real sensation. She merely entered as an adventure while holiday-making with her husband and daughter’. Miss Gourlay played really badly. Though she was 1 up at the eighth, she took 46 for the last round compared with Airs Jacobsen’s 45. The winners of the first round include Misses Diana Fishwick, Wanda Alorgan, Joy Winn, AUle de Gounzbourg, and Grace Avory (America). A NEW ZEALAND PLAYER. [Special to tte ‘ Stak.’] AUCKLAND, May 15. Airs Jacobsen, who created a surprise in the British championship, was formerly Aliss V. Upham, who, previous to her marriage with Air C. N. Jacobsen, an Auckland solicitor, was champion of the Alirainar Golf Club, and now plays here at the Akarana Club. Her father is Air Ernest Upham, who wag the New Zealand fast bowler with the New Zealand cricket team in Australia in 1899.
