WHIPPET RACING

DUNEDIN CLUB’S MEETING The Dunedin Whippet Pacing Club held its St. Leger Meeting on Saturday. There was a good attendance of the public, including visitors from Invercargill. Mr J. B. Aitken, of Invercargill, won the St. Leger with his puppy Bounette, and this dog also won the Open Handicap. The tracks were in good order, and some fast times were recorded. Results:— DUNEDIN ST. LEGER, 150 yds. First heat: Mr G . R. O’Driscoll’s Titri 1, Mrs .1. Latham’s Madam Alin 2. Also started: Wynfall, Proud Prince. Proud Prince finished second, but was disqualified for heating the gun. Time, 9 2-ssec. Second heat; Mr J. P. Aitken’s Bonuette 1, -Mr W. W. Turner’s Silver Tom 2. Also started; Pit-a-Pat. Time, 9 2-ssec. Final: Bonneftc 1, Silver Tom 2, Titri 3. All the dogs moved away to a good start. Halfway up the running Silver Tom and Bounette came away slightly, and it was a wonderful race between these two, Bounette just getting to the finishing post by a head. Titri was one length further back, with Pit-a-Pat a half-length behind Titri. . Time, 9 l-ssec.

NOVICE HANDICAP, 175yds

First heat: Messrs Johnston and APGregor’s Petal Pine 1, Mr E. G. Price's Pit-a-Pat 2. Also started; Signalman, Helen Gold, Little Pal. Time, 10 2-ssec.

Second heat: Air W. Cumberbeach s Whistling Wind 1, Air F. Tanner’s Joy Days 2. Also started: Hermit, Phjlopena, King Billy. Time, 10 2-osec. Final: AVhistling Wind 1, Joy Days 2, Pit-a-Pat 3. Petal Pine led out, and looked like taking the race, hut he stopped when he came to a shadow that was across the track. This left the three placed dogs to fight it out, histling Wind winning Ijy a head. Joy Days was another head in front of Pit-a-Pat. All dogs in the final started off 12iyds. Time, 10 2-osec.

IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP, 173yds

First heat: Air AV. W. Turner’s AVynlall (121yds) 1, Air C. Johnston’s Witch Doctor (12yds) 2. Also started: Helen Gold 124yds, Ring Billy 121yds. Helen Gold was disqualified- for heating the gun. Time, 10 2-ssec. Second hdat: Air W. Cumberbeaclds AVhistling Wind (I.24yds) 1, Air C. N. Unwin’s Hermit (121yds) 2. Also started: Petal Pine 121yds. Time, 10 2-ssec.

Final: AVvnfall 1, Witch Doctor 2, AVhistling AVind 3. Whistling AVmd led till near the winning post. The three gruelling races the leader had had told its talc, and AAynlall and Witch Doctor passed him, AVvnfall winning by a neck, with the third dog half a length further back. Time, 10 4-ssec.

OPEN FLAT HANDICAP, 175yds. First heat; Mr W. H. Turner’s Silver Tom (lljyds) 1, Mrs W. Guthrie’s Biplane (O.Vyds) 2. Also started: Erin's Flight (i2.\yds), Madam Min (6.Vyds). Time, 10 l-ssec. Second heat: Mr .1. J.. Berry’s StarMaster (101 yds) 1, Mr J. R. Aitken’s Bonuette (llj-yds) 2. Also started: hirst Flight 12-J-yds, Titri 121yds. Time, 10 l-ssec. Third beat: Air AV. Veltch s Border Queen (12vds) 1, Air .1- AVinder’s Lady G. (9yds) "2. Star Bond was overweight. Also started: Priceless Gift 12Jyds. Time, 10 l-ssec. Pinal; Bonuette 1, Star Master 2, Border Queen 3. Bonuette had to show brilliant speed to head off Star -Master. The former dog won by a neck, with Borden Queen half a length behind Star Master. Time. lOsec. Maiden Hurdles (five flights), 175yds. —Air H. A. Edmond’s Helen Gold (174yds) 1, Air W. H. Turner’s AVynfall (174yds) 2. Johnston and AFGregor’s Petal Pine (174yds) 3. Chenwood was scratched. Helen Gold led all the way, and won by three lengths, with the third dog a further length away. Helen Gold’s win was very popular, and compensated his owner for the dog’s disqualification earlier in the day. Time, 12 3-ssec. Open Hurdle Handicap, 175yds.—Airs W. Mi - J. Goodman’s Erin’s . Flight (17-J-yds) 3. Also started: Lady G. 12yds. Lady G. finished third; but was disqualified because.his slipper put him over the hurdles on the way to the starting point. Biplane led all the way to win by three lengths* with Lady G. three lengths further back. Time 11 4-osec.
