GROCERS' GIFTS TO CEASE During the difficult times which have been experienced throughout .the recent years: of unemployment there, has been no section of retail traders which has been more liberal in its efforts to assist those whjo. ara ‘in’,the; Unfortunate: position : of being unable to obtain work-at remunerative rates than the grocers. Besides. bearing, their full share of the taxation wh'ich the Govenimeht has imposed for the relief of the unemployed, the master grocers have responded freely to 'the appeals for. help.*by relief depots, and pound a week schemes. The position has now been reached that the average' grocer,: largely because of the burdens imposed on him by taxation, cannot continue the voluntary contributions of past years. It- has therefore, been decided by the executive that members of the' Master Grocers’Association - will not "in' future mak* donations of 1 goods "to relief organisa. tions. • • NO. 4 DISTRICT . The Social Committee of the No. - 4 District will hold its usual .dance .in the South Dunedin Town Hall this evening. There will be the' ever-popular Monte Carlos, and a good attendance, is expected. On Thursday evening the ; annual, hard-up social'and dance,-given by the Triumph Lodge, assisted by the Social Committee, was held, and proved a most successful affair. - Thanhs are duo to; the Triumph: '9 • Band, for. free services rendered, also-the jazz singer. The, mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) spoke of the work done by the Social Committee in relieving distress, and thanked the lodge members. for the work and time spent in connection with’.the social and dance. He was pleased to see such, a large , crowd, present, and thanked them for their support for such a worthy cause. The president of. the No. 4 District (Gr J- L. M‘lndoc) thanked the lodge members and the committe for ■ tfieif ; untiring efforts in making the Evening 'such a success. Supper was .then served. The hard-up parade was .the main event of the evening. The judges were Mr J. W. Patton, Mr J.L.'Banfell, Miss F. Patton, and Mrs Griffiths;, Prizes were awarded as follow:—Best hard-up ladies—Mrs Flint 1, Miss Ancell 2; best ; hard-up gentlemen—Mrs; Bdurke I,_ Mr Gutsell 2- moat original, costume (ladies)—Mrs Parkinson 1, Mrs Hornby 21 most original costume (gentlemen)—-Mr M Ahster 1■ Mr Hornby 2; consolation prize, Mrs Eushton ; first Monte Carlo winners, Miss Connell and Mr Stanley; second Monte Carlo winners, Miss Nieper and Mr Lawrence. A prize was also given to the only boy entering the parade, this being Master McAlister,

• ‘ -•- ‘-vy V»- ■■ SOUTH DUNEDIN ASSOCIATION Another successful concert was : . "held last Sunday in the South Dunedin" Town Hall. Despite the inclemency of the weather the hall "was packed. Amongst the artists were the Majestia Dance Band (in special iitems), Mr, H, M^' Eggers (ventrilbquial turn), Misti Leathley "(songs) Miss' Metcalfe (Trisa' jig and Highland fling), Mr Finriie (songs), and Mr M'Corkindale (accordion solos). The■ accompanist was Mr Kersley. • CONCERT AT ST. HILDA To-morrow evening the Dunedin Highland Pipe ' Band, by the champion reel party, champion sola dancers, and leading artists in vocal solos, elocutionary items, humorous Scotch items, apd instrumental nunw befs, is to give a concert in the Coronation Hall,: Si. Kilda, in aid of the funds of the mayor’s relief depot. A very enjoyable • evening’s .entertainmenti is assured. Admission will be by silven. coin, and patrons are advised to arrive early to secure a seat.
