NATIONAL HORTICULTURE

NEXT SHOW FOR DUNEDIN For the purpose of making arrangements for the next National Horticultural Show a largely representative meeting was held in the Early Settlers’ Hall last evening. Mr D. Tannock, A.H.R.H., was voted to the chair. Mr Tannock said he was pleased to see such a representative gathering. The visitors included representatives from Waimate, Oamaru, and Invercargill. He referred to the last National Show held at the time of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, when the meeting was held in tents. That was the first meeting of the National Committee, but since then meetings bad been held in various in the north, and the New Zealand Nurserymen’s Association and the Horticultural Association had decided that the next gathering should be held in Dunedin in January. This mouth was considered to be the most satisfactory to all parties, and they hoped to be able to stage a creditable show at that time. It was decided that all those present, together with a number of others who forwarded apologies for absence, constitute a committee to carry out the arrangements for the January show. Mr Tannock reported that he and Mr Chas. Rhodes had considered that the Town Hall was the most suitable place in Dunsdin for a national show, and they had been fortunate in securing permission to use the Town Hall, the Concert Chamber, and the basement if they were required. So far, the Town Hall and basement had been booked at a rental of £42, subject to the approval of the National Committee. Mr John Black raised the question as to who was committed for the payment of the rental to the City Corporation. The Secretary (Mr Chas. Rhodes) explained that the National Flower Show was more than a show. The occasion was also intended to be a “ get together ” of all horticultural bodies in New Zealand, and a large _ number of meetings was held at that time. These meetings would be held in the Town Hall without additional cost. The total liability fell equally on the shouder of three bodies —namely, the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, the New Zealand Horticultural Traders’ Association, and the local Horticultural Society. In deciding that the National Show be held in-the last week in January, consideration was given to the visit of the Duke of Gloucester clashing on the same dates. In reply to questions, the Chairman expressed the opinion that he had no doubt that the National Show would be an outstanding success, and pointed to the show in Christchurch, when the takings were in the vicinity of £4OO. Mr Chas. Rhodes was appointed national secretary, Mr P. 0. Vallange treasurer, and the executive was elected:—Messrs J. Nelson, P. Halsted, John Black, H. Hart, and Mrs Gerald Fitzgerald. It was resolved that a list ot subcommittees be drawn up by the executive for presentation to a future general meeting of the committee. A Southland representative raised the question of what space .would be allotted to those interested ut the south, and the chairman pointed out that it was not intended for the’show to be on a competitive basis, but to be a display show. He referred to some of the big shows held at Home, and pointed out that their success largely depended upon the large trade exhibits from organisations and associations, and from private gardeners. The executive would be pleased, however, to receive suggestions from members.
