THE EMPIRE GAMES

JARVIS'S NOMINATION LATEST DEVELOPMENTS The secretary of the Otago, Swimming Centre has received from the secretary of _ the New. Zealand Olympic and Empire Games’ Association (Mr H. Amos) further advice concerning the Otago Centre’s letter to that body. Mr Amos writes that the letter was considered at a special meeting of his executive, when it was decided that Jarvis could not he included in the team for the British Empire Games as he had not been nominated by the Swimming Association. Moreover, it was pointed out that as Jarvis was still at school and only seventeen years of age, it would be advisable for him to wait for another year or two before being considered for Oversea Games. His association wished to emphasise that all nominations for inclusion in New ' Zealand teams must be made through the parent association. At the same time, they fully appreciated the merit of the performances of Jarvis, and sincerely trusted that he would develop to such an extent that he would be one of the first nominations for the Olympic games in 1936. The secretary of the Otago Centre this morning pointed that the Otago Centro had forwarded Jarvis’s_ claims to the New Zealand Swimming Council in accordance with the regular procedure, and following on his performance of swimming 100yds in 56 l-ssec another letter was despatched.to the Swimming Council. The secretary of that body then advised that he had forwarded Jarvis’s claims to the Olympic and Empire Games Association with a suggestion that a. race should be held in neutral water between Crump, Frankham, and Jarvis. On the day that this letter was received hy the Otago Centre an announcement was made by the Olympic body that Crump had been selected for the Empire Games. The Otago Centre then forwarded another letter, to the New Zealand Swimming Council, the secretary replying with a suggestion that the Otago Centre should write direct to the Olympic Council. This was done, and the letter printed above is the reply to the Otago. Centre’s communications. Otago Centre officials have expressed surprise at the position revealed in the Olympic Council’s letter, and the Swimming Council has again been written to, the facts mentioned above being (pointed, out and the request made that the council should urgently consider Jarvis’s position with a view to recommending his nomination even at this late stage. It was also pointed out that the question of age was a trifling one since Crump was about the same age as Jarvis. The secretary of the Swimming Council has also been asked to advise the Otago Centre what action the council has already taken concerning Jarvis’s nomination.
