COUNCIL WAGE CUT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —It is with disgust that I read such letters as those written by “ Ratepayer ” in regard to the restoration of the 2J per cent, cut to council employees. “ Ratepayer ” takes a leap at the rank and file who have to work on the roads in all weathers, but never a word about the inside staff and their 1 motor cars. Does he want to see all of us on the bread and butter line? If ho wants to have the unemployed getting a better living what about selling a few of the bosses’ cars and leaving the under-dog alone? For “ Ratepayer’s ” future guidance I can inform him that nearly all of the employees are genuine ratepayers as far as the south end is concerned. Among the employees I see eight in every ten are returned soldiers who fought for the very right to live, and have a job to keep their wives and children, and the City Fathers are to be congratulated on trying to make things-even a little better for these war heroes. My feelings are with the workless, and I sincerely hope it will not be long before they are all back in jobs enjoying a better standard of living than the Council employees are now receiving.. Cheer up, “Ratepayer,” we might even get the employees the remaining 7$ per cent, because of the promises that New Zealanders fought for the principle of a better country to live in. —I am, etc., Ratepayer No. 2. May 10.
