“BUY DUNEDIN-MADE.”
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I was much interested by the paragraph in your valuable paper of May 8 with reference to New Zealand manufactured goods, , and it was a surprise to me to learn that one-tenth of New Zealand manufactures are of local origin. The figures you quote are particularly interesting, but it would add materially to their value if you could induce the Manufacturers’ Association to go further into the position and let New Zealanders know what proportion of the £4,500,000 of local manufactures is spent in materials grown in the dominion or Otago. For years past the propaganda of the Farmers’ Union has been such that the average farmer considers the city man somewhat of a parasite. It is to bo regretted that propaganda of this nature has been allowed without a protest from those people who create the markets in which the farmers sell, and I consider the best answer to such a ridiculous statement is to show the grower who is his best friend by quoting the amount of his products which are used by the manufacturers in furtherance of their industries. Perhaps you may bo able to induce the Manufacturers’ Association to take up this phase of the position during the forthcoming manufacturers’ week.—l am, etc., S. B. Macdonald.
