ELOPEMENT IN FOG
BRIDE'S SUCCESSFUL RUSE Fog came to the aid of Cupid in tho peaceful village of Selborne, near Alton, Hampshire, recently in bringing a romance to a happy ending. Mr Frank Wallace and Miss Winnie Mainsbridgo had been “ keeping company ” for about five years, but their match was frowned upon by the girl’s parents. For the last three years Mr Wallace has lived alone in the cottage he furnished in readiness for the wedding. Many plans were made, but hitherto the parents managed to frustrate them. One morning, however, fortune smiled upon the couple. At 7 a.m. the bride who is 25, rose and donned her everyday clothes, leaving her mother in bed. Then she slipped away to a neighbour’s house, where her wedding dress had been left overnight, and made a hurried change. Meanwhile the mother s suspicions had been aroused, but while she was talking to the local policeman the brid«i and bridegroom stole away in the Wg and entered'a bus that was waiting at a prearranged spot. Arriving at Alton, they lost no time in gaining the registry office, where they were married. After the ceremony they had a little celebration in town, and returned to their new home in the village.
