ST. JOHN'S, ROSLYN
WELCOME TO REV. L. D. C. GROVES A parishioners’ social was held in the Parish Hall, Roslyn, ori Tuesday evening to afford an opportunity of meeting the Rev. L. D. C. Groves, lately vicar of Balclutha, and Mrs Groves, who have taken up residence in Roslyn. Mr Groves has been appointed assistant priest to Archdeacon W. A. E. Fitchett, who will be consecrated Bishop of Dunedin next month, but will, under an arrangement entered into with the vestry and parishioners of St. John’s, continue as vicar of the parish for some time and live at the vicarage. A large gathering of parishioners was present, and 'the early part of the evening was made enjoyable by progressive whist. After the prizes were presented, Archdeacon Fitchett extended a warm welcome to Mr and Mrs Groves, ami said he hoped that they would bo happy in their work in the parish, and assured the parishioners that Mr Groves was well qualified for the position he was taking over. The wardens (Messrs John Simpson and W. E. Earnshaw) and Mr W. J. Davie, the oldest member of the vestry, also spoke, and on behalf of the parishioners welcomed Mr and Mrs Groves, and wished them every happiness in their work in the parish. Dean Cruickshank and the Rev. W. Hardy Johnson extended a welcome on behalf of the Dunediu clergy and parishes, and assured the Roslyn parishioners that they would do all they could to help their new assistant, and wished Mr and Mrs Groves every happiness. Mr Groves thanked those present for the very warm welcome that had been extended to himself and his wife, and said he felt sure that when the time came for the arrangement to be terminated, and they had to move on, they would do so with feelings of reluctance and regret. He knew he would have the co-operation of all in his wmrk, and would give of his best to the task before him. After supper the evening was given over to dancing.
