LYTTELTON WATERFRONT
DEMAND BY UNEMPLOYED REFUSED SHIPPING DELAYS EXPECTED [Feb United Pees* -Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 9. Further labour troubles were experienced on the Lyttelton waterfront to-day, when a largo section of the unemployed, who have been engaged oa several ships, refused to accept further engagement unless the employer* agreed to pay them standing-by tima from 8 o’clock this morning until 11 o’clock, on the same conditions as th« watersiders, during the period that rain had held up work. ... It was considered by the employer# that, in accordance with the agreement, the men were discharged last night, and if they wanted work they would have to be re-engaged this morning. They therefore refused tho demand. The men refused work, and de-lays-to several ships seem inevitable, a* much labour is required this week.
