JAPANESE COMPETITION
NEW ZEALAND'S POSITION STATEMENT BY MR FORBES [F«ok Oo* Own Coanaepoinunra.] WELLINGTON, May 9. “ The British Government has made no request to New Zealand to reduce Japanese importations of textiles, ’*■ said the Prime Minister, replying to your correspondent’s questions. Mr Forbes pointed out that Dir Runciman (President of the Board of Trade) had referred to the colonies, not to the selfgoverning dominions. New Zealand was kept advised of such proposals by the Imperial Government. Asked whether New Zealand on her own initiative might deal with Japanese competition, Mr Forbes replied that this question had been, raised by witnesses before the recent Tariff Commission, and no doubt had been referred to in its report, so that when it .came before Parliament Japanese competition could be discussed.
