FROM 1 STAR' FILES In the House of Commons a Bill to legalise the cremation of dead bodies was rejected. * * * ♦ The Governments of Italy and Russia have agreed to join the proposed conference of Powers to take into consideration Egyptian affairs. * * * •* The Melbourne Tramway Trust has appointed Mr George Duncan, formerly or Dunedin, its engineer, at a salary of £I,OOO a year. Mr Archibald Forbes, the famous war correspondent, is said to have lost all the money he made in the colonies by his lecturing tour. He invested largely in a Pacific railway scheme, which turned out disastrously. A late despatch from General Gordon states that if he is not speedily relieved he will endeavour to retreat from Khartum and make his way across the desert to the Congo.
