W. J. JARVIS JUST MISSES
IGO YARDS RECORD ATTEMPT At the Municipal Baths last night W. J. Jarvis, of the St. Clair Info Saving Club, made another attempt on the New Zealand 100yds record of 53 l-ssec, held by Noel Crump, of Auckland, blit although he again put Up an outstanding performance in slow . water he faded to better Crump’s time (which was put up iii salt water), the Otago champion's tilnc being 5G l-osc'c. The sivim was witnessed by a largo crowd of spectators. This equalled his effort on April 19, when lie put up the fastest time yet recorded in fresh water by a Nett - Zealander. •Jarvis was sent away by the starter (Mr \V. A. Jenkins) to a beautiful start, and sleeping through the water with his lolig, smooth stroke lie touched at the eiid of a lap in 15 4-osec, but lost a little on the turn. He left 66 2-jyds behind in IJOsec, hut lost badly bn the last turn, though he finished with It great burst of speed ill 56 l-ssec. As an indication of the brilliance of Jarvis’s performance impeded it may be mentioned that this time was 1 4-sseo faster than Noel Crump's Winning time in the NeW Zealand 100yds clhuilpiohhsip in fresh water this season, when Jarvis gained third place, a foot back, after being left at the start. Noel Ryan won the Australian 100yds championship in 55 4-ssec, and R. J. C. Sutton won the last English 100yds in. 56sec. Tire referee last night pas Air A. Findlay, the judges Were Alessrs 1). L. \Vbodfield and I). L. Bannatynfe, the timekeepers Messrs T. P. Williamson, S, Brown, and A. Gfeig, and Air If, Kerr was timekeepers’ steward.
