EMPLOYMENT FOR BOYS
GOOD WDRK OF COMMITTEE COMMUNITY SAVED £12,000 [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 3. Last year the Boys’ Employment Committee found country jobs for 500 city boys, the majority of whom, it is believed, would otherwise have become a charge on the city’s charitable organisations. It is estimated that the committee thus saved the community about £12,000. The annual meeting, held last night, was attended by the president (Sir Joseph Smith), the secretary, and fifteen others, although sixty prominent citizens had been invited to come and .hear of the committee’s work and intentions. “ You should not be disappointed at the small attendance,” remarked the mayor , (Mr Hutchison). “ I have learned ’ that the more you do the less people appreciate you. Had you not been carrying out your work in a way the' public approved you would have had many more here to-night.” Another person present remarked that all those who had turned up were extremely busy men.
