THE AUSTRALIANS' TOUR Last night's meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre was attended by tlie president (Mr W. A. Jenkins) and. Messrs 0. Thomson, It. Nuttall, U. Allan, J. Swan, A. Greig, E. G. James, 13. T. Woodtield, M. • Tayjor, 13. C. Bannatyno, 1. Laing,’ S. Brown, B. Kerr, \V. H. Matthews, It. C. Stackhouse, W. Williams, and E. C. Isaacs (hon. secretary). Reporting with regard to the tour of the Australians, the Secretary stated that Mr .Dudley Helhnrich had written intimating that Reg. Clark, Harry Tickle, and Mr Hellmrich (a; manager and in' a coaching capacity) would be available to tour New Zealand from the middle of November until the end of December. Clark would return from the Empire Games in September, but would not enter Sydney University until next year. Both Tickle and Clark had shown fine form since the national championships, and both would do everything in their power to ensure the success of carnivals at which they appeared. The Secretary said that appearances were being accepted so far by the Southland, Ashburton, and Otago Centres, and by the Gamaru and Alexandra Clubs, and replies were still awaited from West Coast, Canterbury, and South Canterbury. As soon as answers were received the negotiations could be completed; since everything pointed to the tour being a big success. A letter was also received from Mr Hellmrich asking for information as to the negotiations for the tour that was to have taken place last season, the president and secretary being instructed to supply particulars. EMPIRE GAMES. The Secretary said that he had again written to the New Zealand Swimming Council with regard to W. J. Jarvis’s nomination for the New Zealand team for the Empire Games. He had expressed the centre’s appreciation of the council secretary’s efforts in the matter and urging the council to ask the Olympic Council for an immediate an-

nouncement so that in the event oi Jarvis’s nomination being approved an immediate appeal for funds could be launched. —Tlie secretary’s action was approved. A suggestion was made by Mr Thomson that the centre should present Jarvis with an illuminated address to commemorate Ids recent New Zealand record performance, and it was resolved that the question should be gone into fully at next meeting. \ GENERAL. Attention was drawn to the lact that the New Zealand Council had ifot forwarded cmtihcates to swimmers who nad broken records as far back as sec oral years ago. it was pointed out that Keg. Geddes bad not been supplied with certificates for Ida junior breast-stroke record which was established several years ago, and that tlie certificate lor Ids intermediate records during tlie last two years had not been iorwarded. S. \V. Jarvis had not obtamed certificates for Ids New Zealand junior free-style records, nor had W. J J arvis been given a certificate for Ids New Zealand 50yds record established tlie season before last.- —On the motion of Mr Thomson it was decided to approach the Now Zealand Council directing its attention t 6 the outstanding certificates and asking that the mutter be rectified. Mr Thomson stressed tlie desirability of the centre doing something to encourage the competitors at the/primary schools’ swimming'championships, and suggested that tlie Otago State Primary Schools’ Sports Association should bo offered a trophy to be given at the schools’ carnival to the most promising or most improved swimmer or as prescribed by the association. It was decided to write to the. Schools’ Sports Association offering to award a trophy annually, and asking it to suggest the nature of the award, but pointing out that it was not desired to allot the trophy for the highest aggregate of points. A letter was received from tlie Schools’ Sports Association thanking tlie centre for the assistance it had given in connection with the recent primary schools’ carnival.
