CONCERT IN STUART HALL The opening evening of the Social Club for Unemployed will be held in Stuart Hall, Frederick street, on Saturday evening at 7.45. Mr Drake’s pupils will supply _ the programme, which should prove just as popular as those of last year. A welcome is extended to all relief workers and their families. ' UNEMPLOYED WORKERS' MOVEMENT The annual general meeting of the Dunedin Central branch of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement was held in the Trades Hall on Monday, evening. Mr J. Gilchrist (president) presided over a large attendance of members and their wives. A vote of condolence was passed with the parents of a late number of the executive, Mr W. Robertson, who died since last meeting, members standing in silence for a few minutes. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: —President, Mr G. Geddcs ; vice-president, Mr M. O’Rorke; hon. secretary, Mr F. O’Rorke; executive — Messrs Maitland, Jamison, Herring, Westfold, Petrie, East, Murrell, Spence, Bone, and Mrs Maitland. A vote of thanks to and appreciation of the services rendered by the president (Mr J. Gilchrist) was carried by acclamation. Messrs Gilchrist, M'Arthur, and Mrs Bennett reported on interviewing Mr Bromley re treatment meted out to the unemployed. The following remit was endorsed ; “ That the secretary write the various organisations to convene a meeting of delegates for April 3 in the Trades Hall' re the setting up of a district council of unemployed.” Mr G. Dale and the secretary were elected as delegates to represent Dunedin Central. Mr J. Gilchrist and Mrs Bennett were appointed to wait on Drs Thomson and Lythe to ascertain if they have received any instructions of what constitutes physical unfitness for camp, and whether the doctors were prepared to stand by their already published declaration of what constitutes physical unfitness. A resolution was carried that the secretary write the Minister of Public Works for an understanding as to wages and conditions of unemployed camps, and if provisions can be made for men to take their wives and families. Speakers for Sunday afternoon meetings were appointed as follows: —At the
Oval—Messrs M. Silverstone, C. M‘Arthur, J. Townley, and A. B. Powell. At Hancock Park—Messrs G. Dale, G. Geddes, S. Ikin, and M. O’Rorke. The chairman intimated that Miss Ruby Baxter’s concert party had agreed to entertained the unemployed on Thursday, May 3, in the Trades Hall. Mr G. Geddes and the secretary were appointed'to attend the meeting of the Council of Industrial Workers next Monday evening in the Trades Hall.
