OVERCOME BY SMOKE
A NARROW ESCAPE [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May I. Mr H. Streeter, a contractor, of Christchurch, and Sir R. G. M‘Kie, a carpenter, also of Christchurch, had a, narrow escape when a house at JDunsandel, which they were engaged in altering and renovating, was burned down. The house was the property or Mr H. Rollings, and .was insured for £250. About 5.30 Mr M‘Kie heard th« fire, and both men gathered their personal effects and hastily left the building. Mr Streeter, _ however, returned for some money which he had left, and was overcome by smoke and heat. Mr M‘Kie broke a window and dragged, out Mr Streeter, who soon recovered.
