BROADCASTING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —“ No Malice,” in answer to my criticism of April 30, is evidently quite sure I wrote with malicious intention. To start with I do not know the conductor or any member of the studio orchestra, or for that matter any individual of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra. 'My opinion is also quite unbiased, and'was given solely from a musical standpoint. The ‘ Radio Journal.’ I am given to understand, is the official publication of the Broadcasting Board, and for that reason is hardly worth quoting. The Dunedin Symphony Orchestra I have never had the pleasure of hearing, but “ No Malice ’’ must bear in mind (hat it is not- numbers that count where quality of music is concerned. By the number of brass plates one sees in strolling round your city, most bearing degrees of musical efficiency, 1 can only still maintain that the standard reached by the studio orchestra is considerably below what one would expect. 1 have simply stated my opinion, and unlimited correspondence on this matter will note alter it.—l am, etc.. As Othebs See Us. May 2.

. TO TUB EDITOR. .Sir, —It has been left to a visitor to ventilate a grievance anent the performances of the orchestra at 4YA broadcasting station. The complaint is long overdue. The only reason 1 take it that protests against the standard of these performances have not long ere this been sent to the local Press is that listeners-in simply switch off when this orchestra is announced. This is common knowledge in Dunedin to-day. Compared with orchestras broadcasted from other studios, this local one is in the ABC class. Yes, wo know there are players here the equal of any in New Zealand. The position demands redress, for it must bo obvious to a novice in orchestral music, that we arc

not getting value for money.—l am, etc., Listexek-in. May 2.
