PORT CHALMERS AFFAIRS

PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE MEETING The monthly meeting of the league last night was presided over by Mr W. Culbert. In replying to a request from the league in regard to improving the upper road from the railway bridge to Reynoldstown, the Town Clerk wrote that the Works Committee had the matter under consideration. Application had been made to the District Highways Council to have the road in question declared a highway.—Resolved to thank the council for taking the matter up, and to express the hope that when the road was being improved the grade to the bridge would be also improved. The Chairman said that the council had recognisedthat suggestions from the league were made in a spirit of helpfulness. The league did not wish to dictate. Mr N. Dodds pointed out the need for a light over the posting boxes at the Post Office. The Government had agreed to do so two years ago, but it was still not done. The league decided to draw the attention of the postmaster to the matter. A member said that a building in Mount street belonging to the Mechanic Institute was in an unsightly state and badly in need of a coat of paint. The league resolved to bring the matter before the committee of the institute. A discussion took place in respect to the present site of the rubbish tip, which was not in a suitable place. A member stated that the trouble was to find a more suitable site. Further discussion was put off until the annual meeting. A member said he understood the council was thinking of tarrsealing the street extending from Fox street to Slant street. The league was of opinion that was a desirable improvement, and hoped the council was taking it in hand. A two-way approach to the upper railway station, it was reported, was being made, and it would be an improvement.—The league decided to ask that a lamp be put on the outside of the railway building to light the approach. The Chairman said it was pleasing to see that a scrub .fence was being erected to break the sand drift at Mussel Bay.
