ORR’S ESCAPADE
THROUGH PORTHOLE TO SEE SYDNEY YOUNG METEOROLOGIST'S PLANS [Pa» Ukitbd Priss Assocutiob.] Auckland' March 5. William Orr, an American, aged nineteen, who was junior meteorologist with' the Byrd Expedition, and, when prevented from landing at Sydney owing to being a prohibited immigrant, climbed through a porthole and evaded the wharf authorities, returned to-day by the Aorangi and conferred with the American Consul. Orr says that his plans for the future are indefinite. He hopes to obtain a visa and return to Sydney, where he believes he could secure a meteorological appointment. Referring, to the Sydney incident, he said he objected to the compulsory confinement and went ashore after two days “ seeing Sydney.” He then reported to the Union Company, which was responsible to the immigration authorities for his return to New Zealand.
