SCENES IN PARIS

A RIOTOUS MOB SCATTERED BY POLICE Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyiight. PARIS, February 6. •Mounted Republican Guards withstood 4,000 ex-soldiers, Royalists, and students bearing banners and chanting the ‘ Marseillaise.’ The troopers drew their swords and charged and scattered the demonstrators. Some of the rioters threw handfuls of sand into the horses’ eyes. Four hundred of them, headed by a blind Deputy, M. Sciapini, smashed the barricades and reached the barred doors of the Ministry of the Interior before they were dispersed. M. Sciapini was trampled down, and seven were arrested. AUTHORITIES PREPARE FOR RIOTS PRIME MINISTER APPEALS FOR CALMNESS. PARIS, February 6. (Received February 7, at 11 a.in.) The city is prepared for riots. The iron grilles have been stripped from the trees, and all tables and chairs outside the cafes, which are rioters’ favourite weapons, have been removed by the police. Five different mobs—namely, the ExSoldiers’ Union, the League of Young Patriots, Royalists, Fascists, and Communists—are expected to converge on the Chamber of Deputies. The Socialist Party has issued a mobilisation order, calling on Socialists to report to-night at the local party offices.

The chief difficulty of the police will not be the protection of Parliament as much as the prevention of rival mobs clashing. M. Daladier is appealing to Parisians to remain calm. He says there has been no movement of troops. M. Chiappc’s successor, M. Sibour, asserts: “The situation is worrying. Paris is far from calm.”

M. Sibour is personally in charge of 14,000 members of the Republican Guard, the jarde mobile, and the police, which he hopes will be' sufficient to maintain order. Civil aeroplanes, with the exception of commercial air services, are prohibited from flying over Paris. The troops of the Paris garrison are confined to barracks to prevent them mingling with the crowd.

FREE FIGHT IN CHAMBER SITTING SUSPENDED. PARIS, February 6. (Received February 7, at 10 a.in.) . When M. Daladier began his speech a free fight broke out on the floor of the House and the sitting was suspended. The police and military received drastic instructions for the preservation of order. A surprising development is the reinstatement of M. Fabry at the Comedio Franchise. It is stated that M. Thome is being provided with a diplomatic post. M. Chiappe took a tearful farewell from the prefecture and moved with his wife into private apartments.
