AUSTRALIAN TEAM’S VISIT

ALLOWANCES TO PLAYERS NO INCREASE LIKELY Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, February 6. (Received February 6, at 11.30 a.m.) When the complaints concerning the allowances to members of the cricket team to tour New Zealand were mentioned to the chairman of the Board of Control (Mr Oxlade), he said that the’ players would have all their travelling and hotel expenses paid and would receive reasonable allowances for laundry and other items. The allowances were the same as those operating for the last two visits to New Zealand by Australian teams. It does not appear likely that there will be any increase in the allowances, as the Board of Control has finally dealt with the question. REPLACING THE WITHDRAWALS A REFLECTION ON NEW ZEALAND Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, SYDNEY, February 6. (Received February 6, at 1 p.m.) Hary Theak, a New South Wales fast bowler, and J. Scaife, a Victorian batsman, have been chosen to replace Nagel and Rigg. The withdrawals from the team and a hint of further withdrawals have perturbed the minds of cricket enthusiasts, and it is generally considered that the small allowance of fifteen shillings a day will result in a considerably weakened team going to New Zealand. The officials of the Northern Districts Club have sent n petition to the executive of the New South Wales Association that it call a special meeting to consider the raising of the players’ allowances to twenty-five shillings a day. Grade officials point out that the players to England would tour under the best possible financial arrangements, and it would he unwise and unjust of the board to ask other players to represent Australia in New' Zealand on an allowance much below that granted by the State association. Such a state of affairs was a reflection on New Zealand. The Board of Control, however, and not the New_ South Wales Association, should act in the matter.
