JUBILEE REGATTA.
TO THE EDITOII. Sir,- —The aquatic festivities held at Port Chalmers on Saturday afternoon ■were an outstanding success and -worthy of the jubilee occasion. Providence was kind in giving just the ■weather desired —warm sunshine and a full-sail breeze. It appeared that the officials excelled past records in the amplitude and variety of the programme provided. The boys’ dinghy race was interesting., but wliy was a girls rowing race overlooked ? The use of a loud speaker would have been an advantage. In distant years a dozen ships would have displayed from the masthead ropes of bunting in honour of the fete, both at Port Chalmers and at Dunedin. The duty of putting up the flags was not generally remembered on Saturday, but here and there a flag flew gaily in the breeze. The occasion was well advertised; ten rowing clubs of this island were represented; the attendance ran into thousands, and the bright summer attire of the ladies present was worthy of the fete. 1 have attended the regatta held at Port Chalmers over a long period, and wish to thank the promoters for the fine programme they carried through within a few hours, and for ’the excellent preparations made for the carrying out of the sports, whether rowing, sailing, motor boats, or swimming.—-I am, etc., J.G.M. February 5.
