CRICKET IN SOUTH OTAGO
SHIELD FINAL. The South Otago Shield final, between Balclutha and Milton, was concluded at Kaitangata on Saturday afternoon. At the conclusion of play the previous Saturday Balclutha had declared its innings closed with eight wickets down for 225 runs, and Milton had commenced its innings with no wickets down for 16 runs. The final result was a win for Balclutha by 60 runs, and tho shield goes to this team for the third year in succession. Milton’s opening wickets went fairly cheaply, but Binnicorabe and Densem made a good stand, and at the afternoon tea adjournment Milton had a fighting chance of winning the match with seven wickets in hand to make the required 100-odd runs, but was dismissed for 165. Binnicombe made 74, the only other double-figure scorers were Densem (30) and W. Heads (26). The Balclutha bowlers were Lennox, three wickets for 38 runs; Boddington, four for 46; Henderson, two for 51; Baxter, 1 for 23. Boddington bowled very consistently, his analysis being 23 overs, 9 maidens, 4 wickets, 46 runs. KNOCK-OUT COMPETITION. The first round of the knock-out cup competition was played at various centres in the district, the results being :—CTutha Valley (107) defeated Waiwera (98), Kaitangata A defeated Owaka by 90 runs, Milburn defeated H.S. Old Boys. Kaitangata B had the bye.
