LAWN TENNIS

ENGLISH PLAYERS IN AUSTRALIA ADELAIDE, February 2. In the matches played at the tournament to-day the results were:— Wild© beat Turnbull, 6-3, 6-1. Hopman beat Hughes, 11-9, 6-2. Quist beat Lee, 9-7, 6-2. Berry and Hughes beat Crawford and Hopman, 16-14, 3-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Wilde presented his best display in Australia, and routed Turnbull in forty minutes of play. Features of his play were fiery serving and powerful driving. Ho lost only four games in the two sets. Turnbull was unsettled, merely poking about, being nonplussed by Wilde’s placements. Hopman, who played in shorts, volleyed consistently in his match against Hughes. Both were spectacular, but Hopman seldom erred, picking the right balls. He dominated the play towards the end against the Englishman’s desperate efforts. Quist played in shorts. He and Lee were responsible for brilliant exchanges, Quist pitting attractive forehand shots against his opponent’s backhand and a good length. Quist quickly drew ahead, and held the lead comfortably. In a fast game in the doubles Hopman’s volleying and net anticipation were outstanding. He merits inclusion in the Davis Cup team. It was the most thrilling doubles of the present series. These sports depots will rcstring your racket with Edwards’s Gut, used exclusively by Crawford, world's champion.
