GAELIC SOCIETY

The programme submitted by the Gaelic Society at its monthly meeting last night was one to wake remembrances of the Highlands and its sentiments as expressed in song and dancing. The entertainment, needless to say, found favour with the largo audience.

A feature of the programme was the playing by Piper George Yardley of the pibroch, ‘ MacLeod of Macleod’s Salute,’ composed by Donald Mor MacCrimmon about the year 1603 in honour of Buairidh Mor MacLeod. Chief A. M'Lachlan was in the chair.

The programme opened with two selections from the choir, ‘ Caismeachd Chloinn Chamrain ’ and * Gur Gile mo Leannan.’ Other contributors were:— Miss MacGregor, songs 1 The Star o’ Robbie Burns ’ and 1 The Anld House ’; Mr Peter Robb, ‘ The Wee Hoose Mang the Heather ’ and ‘ When I Get Back Again tac Bonnie Scotland ’; Miss Ritchie, songs ‘My Ain Folk ’ and ‘ Coinin’ Thru’ the Rye ’; Master Allister MacCaskill, Gaelic songs_ ‘ Ribhinu Og ’ and ‘ C’ait an Caidil an Rihhinn ’; Mr R. Scott, songs ‘ The Road to the Isles ’ and ‘ Gang Awa Bonnie Lassie ’; Miss Barclay, songs ‘ Will Ye No Come Back Again ’ and 1 Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal ’; Mr W. Race, songs ‘ Hail, Caledonia ’ and ‘ The Sunshine of Your Smile ’; Gaelic choir, ‘ Chi mi na MorCheanna ’ and ‘ O, tennaibh dluth ’us Togahh Fonri ’; Mrs Seavle, songs ‘ Annie Laurie ’ and ‘My Ain Wee Hoose ’; Mr George Currie, songs 1 The Photo of the Girl I Left Behind ’ and 1 A Fine Man, John '; Misses Urquhart and Barclay and Mr Eager, trio, 1 Tho Piper of Dundee ’ and ‘ The Dear Little Shamrock ’; Mrs R. M'Rae and Mrs A. M'Lennan, Gaelic song ‘ Thug mi mo Lamb dow Eileanacli ’ ; Misses Peggy Black. Norma Marshall, Betty Gerrie, and Betty Brown danced a Highland reel; Miss' Noeline Plank, a seann truibhais; Misses Peggy Blanch and Bella Kellahan, a clog dance; and Miss Margaret Macmillan the swords. Mr R. Scott led the choir, and Mrs A. Matheson and Miss George played the accompaniments. Mr Alexander Mackenzie was M.C. to tho dance which followed the programme.
