WINNING CREW RETURNS ENTHUSIASTICALLY RECEIVED A crowd of about 500 accorded an enthusiastic welcome to the Lyttelton crew—R. Hendry and S. Sillers—which, won the Z class sailing championship at Dunedin last week. When the express arrived ,on the wharf they were seized by their club mates and carried shoulder-high to the steps of the railway bridge, musical honours behig accorded by the Lyttelton Marine Band, which played ‘See the Conquering Hero Comes,’ At the steps they were received by the mayor (Air W. I’. Lester), and the commodore of the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club (Air C. E. Brown), states the Christchurch ‘ Press.’ Mr Brown said he wished to extend the congratulations of the club members to the two winners of a New Zealand championship. He hoped they would go further and at some future time represent the province in the Sanders Cup Contest. Yachting was flourishing, especially in the South Island, and he hoped that the time was not far distant when the annual races for the big-keel-yachts would be revived. The Aldyor said it was gratifying to see so large a crowd present to welcome home the winners of the Z class contest. The two boys had brought honour to Lyttelton, in being the first to win the handsome trophy presented by the Port Nicholson Motor Boat Chib for interport competition. He hoped that Lyttelton would be successful in. defending the cup for -some time. Yachting was, in his opinion, the finest and cleanest sport in the dominion, ns the Sanders Cup contest held at Lyttelton last year had shown. The Lyttelton delegate (Air Alagnus Smith)! deserved the thanks of yachting supporters in Lyttelton for' his splendid work, and thanks, were due to the Dunedin people, also, for their hospitality. At the mayor’s request cheers were given for the Lyttelton crew 1 and delegate. Air Smith said that no provision had been made for miniature cups to go with the cup, but Air R. S. Black; a former Alayor of Dunedin, had offered to present'miniatures' to the Lyttelton crew. If the offer was accepted by the Yachting Council, Airs Black, who was a native of Lyttelton, would present the cups when she. visited Lyttelton in a few weeks. The Lyttelton skipper, R. Hendry, said he felt very proud to be the first to win the cup. and he thanked those present for iboir reception. -He said the hospitality of the Dunedin' people had been wonderful, and their host, Air Burt, at whose home the Lyttelton r-rCw were billeted, had been - like a father to them.
