VISCOUNT ALLENBY
SENSATIONAL RUMOURS PLOT AGAINST LIFE Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. SINGAPOBE, January 30. Sensational rumours are current in Singapore that Viscount Allenby was to be the victim of an Eastern “ Serajevo ” or plot to start war in the Pacific. Although discounted at the time, these now seem to have been founded on fact. Viscount Allenby’s movements have been a mystery since he hurried through, Singapore, bound for Java, on the evening of January 5, intending to visit Bali and return to attend Rotary and ex-sevico functions at Singapore. Later it was rumoured locally that he had flown secretly to Singapore to participate in the Naval Conference, but apparently Viscount Allenby flew secretly to Sumatra and caught a ship Homeward on January'l3, explaining to Singapore that it was necessary to cancel his arrangements for urgent reasons. The latter proved to be the discovery in Java of a plot in which three non-Dutch subjects were involved to kill Viscount Allenby. The police received descriptions of the plotters and took the, necessary steps, but Viscount Allenby, realising that he would be incessantly shadowed, changed his plans and made a fictitious booking to fly to Singapore.
