SHEEP VALUES WELL MAIHTAIHED Consisting mostly of medium and lighter sorts, with a big proportion of cows and heifers, 214 cattle were yarded at Burnside, to-day. Very few pens' of prime heavy_ cattle were forward, and some specially fine sorts of cows and heifers were in evidence. The market opened quietly at last week s rates, bidding being almost lifeless. The sale throughout was fairly even, country butchers giving considerable help with the lighter stuff. No change was made until the last few pens were reached, when late arrivals found it necessary to buy their requirements. The top price of the sale was shared bv two sellers —Mr R. T. A medium yarding of about 1,300 fat sheep came forward. _ Three trucks of prime wethers were included, and one truck of extra prime young ewes, the balance being medium and lightweight wethers and ewes, with the latter predominating. The sale opened at values about on a par with lastweek’s closing rates. Heavy wethers met with good competition, selling up to 30s, while extra prime young ewes made to 26s 9d. Owing to the number forward, medium and light ewes met with an erratic demand, prices for these classes being 2s a head lower than before. 'lhe sale continued about even, little change being noticeable until near the end, when owes were inclined to droll a shade in value. In the store pens there was a large yarding of medium quality vealers. which sold at prices about 5s less than last week, bringing up to £2 ss. The cattle made up a medium yarding, ami included a small line of well bred two-voar-okl steers and lieilers from the Clinton district. These sold under keen competition up to £4 16s for the steers, and to £3 3s for the heifers. Three-vear-olds of mixed breeding sold up to £5 2s 6d, and two-year-olds of the same class brought to £3 18s. Other heifers realised to £2. A medium yarding of honors sold at late rates to £3.
