INVERCARGILL WOOL SALES

HIGH LEVEL MAINTAINED TOP PRICE FOR MORNING 24i PENCE [Pvn United Press Association.'] INVERCAIIGILL. January 31. Tlio first Invercargill wool sale of the season opened tin’s morning liei'ore a full and representative bench of buyers. the catalogue comprising over 30,000 hales. For the opening catalogue the bidding was slow, hut appeared particularly sound in all halfhreds and fine wools. Medium crossbreds showed a slight casing from par to a farthing per pound, while very coarse grades’of cross-bred were easier, in some cases to the extent of a halfpenny per lb. Pieces, bellies, and locks met. ' with excellent competition, and were quite up to Christchurch parity, while crutchings, if anything, exceeded the values ruling there. Of the first catalogue lull.y 05 per cent, of the offering was sold under the hammer. in most cases vendors realised a hundred per cent., in some eases two hundred, more than was received from the same clips last year. Values have improved considerably sincey the opening of the dominion sales', and, though a slight easing was shown in the coarser cross-breds, Southland growers have benefited to au equal extent with the northern centres, with the exception of certain low lines in farmers’ cross-bred wools. The outstanding feature of the sale during the morning was the high values ruling for finer grade pieces, which, in a good manv cases, exceeded the values obtained for fleece portions of the clip. In the opinion of buyers the Southland clip is most favourable, and the 'general comment is that the get-up this year compares more than favourably with that of past seasons. Continental and Japanese competition appeared to be making the market go far as the sale progressed. The top price so far is 24Jd for fine Corriedale ewe wool from the Five Elvers district. This wool has obtained the top price for the last ten vears. The first pieces of this clip realised 21d, the second 20d, and crutchings ITJd.
