G. SMITH’S TREBLE
The Dunedin Amateur Cycling Club at the Caledonian Ground last evening held its weekly meeting, and in spite of an exceptionally strong wind blowing from the harbour some good sprinting and racing in both cycling and running events was witnessed. E. Smith was riding exceptionally well, carrying off all the cycling events. _ In the mile and a-half running handicap L. K. Donovan, the promising Caversham runner, went well from the virtual scratch mark to win this event after moving easily all the way. C. Gilchrist successfully attacked the track record for Mr Paterson’s cup previously held by G. Lucas, his time being Imm Bsec. The cycling heats were made more interesting by the appearance of J. Flynn, of Invercargill. Results:— CYCLING. HALF-MILE HANDICAP (President’s Cup). First Heat.—G. Smith (scr) 1, C. Gilchrist (scr) 2, A. Blackie (20yds) 3. Four starters. At the bell Lucas led from Blackie, with Smith and Gilchrist 10yds back. Smith led into the straight and went on to win by half a length. A similar distance separated second and third. Time, Imin 8 3-ssec. Second Heat. —E. Fletcher (35yds) 1, J. Kewish (20yds) 2, B. Oakes (40yds) 3.' Five starters. At the bell Mussen led a close bunch. Fletcher opened up a gap going down the back and went on to win by 10yds. Half a length separated second and third. Time,
Eight starters. With three laps to go Donovan had caught the leaders. Pope led for the last three laps, but going down the back Donovan went to the front and won by syds. In a good finish George beat Pope by inches for second place. Time, 7min 11 4-ssec. INTERCLUB RELAY. Civil Service No. 1 (S. Asher, J. Gerken, A. R. Geddes, E. L. Botting) scr .••• 1 Mixed team (C. Imin 8sec. —Final. — G. Smith 1 E. Fletcher 2 C. Gilchrist 3 At the bell the field was bunched. Fletcher led Smith down the back and was in front coming into the straight. In a good finish Smith came up to win bv a wheel. Gilchrist was 10yds back third. Time, Imin 11 2-5sec. ONE-MILE SCRATCH RACE. G. Smith 1 C. Lucas 2 Five starters. With a lap to go Smith and Lucas were the only competitors left. Smith led at the bottom bend and won by 15yds. THREE-MILE HANDICAP. G. Smith, 25yds 1 E. Fletcher, 120yds 2 C. Gilchrist, 25yds 3 Eight starters. At the bell Gilchrist led, with the field close up. Smith led into the straight, and in a good finish won by three-quarters of a length. Ten yards separated second and third. Time, 7min 36 2-5sec. RUNNING. 110 YARDS HANDICAP, First Heat.—B. Spiers (5yds) 1, F. E. Smith (3iyds) 2, A. K. Brown (8i yards) 3. Six starters. Won by a yard each way. Time, 12sec. Second Heat.—A. Clark (7yds) 1, A. B. Thomson (2£yds) 2, S. Longworth (7yds) 3. Six starters. Won by inches, with a foot separating second and third.
