STEAMER HELD UP
GALE WITHOUT A CREW ! [Pm United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, January 29. -When. the Canterbury Steam ~ Shipping Company endeavoured to - obtain » crew for the steamer Gale, ■ which has ju«t completed an overhaul, there was ns response. Seamen and firemerf gave no official reason for their action; and a representative of the company would not divulge any information regarding any -trouble. The report is. current, however, that th# crew would not sail with the master selected by the company. The Wellington Seamen’s Union was communicated with, and it is understood that a reply was received asking union men to sign. on. Yesterday morning the'men held an informal meeting at the Lyttelton office of the union, but nothing further eventuated. Tpthe Gale is still awaiting a crew.
