JUVENILE EMPLOYMENT INCREASING An increase in the number of juveniles placed in employment is reported by the Vocational Guidance Association’s officer (Mr T. Conly), who states that the improvement. is more noticeable in the case of girls, over thirty having been found employment so far this year, principally as shorthand typists and factory workers. Boys are going to farms, offices, foundries, and a variety of, occupations. The association’s register now has the names of many who left school last year, and Mr Corny will be pleased to near from anyone who will engage a- boy _or girl, thereby helping to relieve the situation. NATIONAL WORKERS' MOVEMENT A meeting of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement. Dunedin Central branch, was held in the Trades Hall on Tuesday evening. Mr J. Gilchrist presided over a good attendance of members. Correspondence was received from Mr G. Smith, Auckland, the secretary of the Palmerston North U.W.M., Mr B. O’Donnell (secretary D.L.R.C.), Mr P. Marchant (secretary. Southland Relief Workers’ Association), Mr R. Harrison (secretary General Labourers’ Union), Mr F. Jones, M.P., and the national treasurer of N.U.W.M. Wellington. The president and secretary reported on an interview with the mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) regarding the use of a room in the Town Hall to take the ballot of relief workers ,on national strike action. Messrs Donald, Williams, and Gilchrist reported., having interviewed the various unions—bakers, pressers, furniture, tramways, and waterside workers. Mr Geo. Geddes and the secretary reported attending the Dunedin North Unemployed Association, The . Select Committee s organising report was received. The balance-sheet of the concert and dance held in the Trades Hall on December 15 was .approved. Mr H. Myles, chairman of the Mornington N.U.W.M., addressed-the meeting, and was accorded ~a- hearty vote of thanks. ' Mrs GeO. Geddes was appointed to interview the Green Island relief .workers, and to take out ballot papers. Arrangements were made’for the taking of the ballot at the Town Hall this week-end, Mr J. Robinson being appointed returning officer and Mr J. W. Munro, M.P., and the secretary (Mr F. O’Rorke) scrutineers. The counting will take place in the Trades Hall on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Speakers for Sunday afternoon’s meeting were appointed as follow: —At the Oval: Messrs J. W. Munro, M.P., P. Neilson, G. Geddes, S. Ikin, B. O’Don.nell, and A. B> Powell. At the Botanical Gardens: Messrs F. Jones, M.P., C. Moss, J; Gilchrist j M. O’Rorke, Z. Williams, and C. M. Silverstone. Messrs Z. Williams and the secretary were appointed to represent the executive at the O.L.R.C. Conference of all trade Unions and unemployed organisations this evening in the Trades Hall. Mr S. Ikin delivered an interesting address, his subject being ‘ Wqol and War.’ Mr George Geddes agreed to address the members at the next meeting on Tuesday evening. STRIKE BALLOT An official of the workers’ unemployment movement informed a ‘ Star ’ reporter that 83 per cent, of the men who were paid yesterday made use of the adjacent polling booth, where votes were being cast for or against a general strike among relief workers. Votes were still being taken to-day, and the results should be known about 2 o’clock on Saturday afternoon. BEACH DAY EXCURSION “ Through the generosity and goodwill of the staff, the children or the unemployed will be carried to the beaches at practically the amount granted by the committee,” said Cr H. C. Campbell (chairman of the Tramways Committee), at the meeting of the City Council last night. He thanked the staff for coming forward with their offer. The mayor thanked Cr Campbell for the manner in which the transportation of the children had been arranged.
