EVENING SPGNTS MEETING A sports meeting was held by the Dunedin Amateur Cycling Club in conjunction with tiie Anglican and Hanover Baptist Athletic Clubs last evening { at the Caledonian Ground. A strong wind blew from the Cargill road end of the ground. In the cycling events G. Smith won the Half-mile Handicap from scratch. The Mile and a-half Handicap, which was won by A. Blackie, provided a fine finish, there being only inches between the winner and L. Schmeltz. C. Gilchrist challenged C. Lucas, the holder of the Paterson Cup for quartermile time trials, but was unsuccessful, missing the record by a fifth of a second. Results:— v CYCLING. HALF-MILE HANDICAP. First heat: G. Smith (scr) 1, G. Foster (scr) 2, L. Schmeltz (35yds) 3.; Five starters. The field was bunched at the bell. Coming into the straight Smith took the lead, and went; on to win by a length, with two lengths separating second and third. Time, Imin llsec. Second heat: C. Gilchrist (scr) 1, A. Blackie (20yds) 2, B. Oakes (35yds) 3. Six starters. At the bell Laws led, with the field close up. Gilchrist took the lead going down the back straight, and won by a length. Going down the back Foster took the lead, followed by Smith. In a good finish Smith .came up fast to win by two lengths, with Blackie a length back third. Time, Imin 11 3-ssec. At the bottom bend Blackie shot to the front, and went on to win by a length, with 15yds between second and third. Time, 3min 46sec. Second heat: G. Smith (15yds) 1, V. Laws (140yds - ) 2, B. Oakes (110yds) 3. Five starters. With a lap and a-half to go Smith had caught the front markers. Laws led going down the back straight, but Smith took charge at the bottom bend, and won by a length.
