FIRST MEETING OF COUNCIL FRUIT OF THE CARNEGIE GRANT [Per UmrEijpt Press Association,)^ WELLINGTON, January 15'. At the first meeting of the New Zealand Council of Educational Research held in Wellington' to-day were taken to establish the wbrk of educational investigation made possible by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation. Six weeks ago word was received that the corporation had decided'; to found a research council in this, country and provide it with an annual grant of 17,500d0l for five years. . v . The members of the new council; all of whom were present to-day, arh Professor Hunter (vice-chancellor of the University of New Zealand), Professor Gould (professor of education at Victoria University College), Professor Shelley (professor of education at Canterbury University College), Mr F. Milner (rector of the Waitaki Boys’ High School), Mr C. M. Gilray (headmaster of M’Glashan College, Dunedin), Mr D. M. Rae" (inspector of schools in Auckland), and Mr T. U. Wells (a member of the Auckland University College Council). The draft constitution prepared by a sub-committee was submitted to the meeting. Some amendments wer etnado arid the constitution will be adopted after steps have been taken to have the council incorporated. The general aim outlined in the constitution is the fostering of educational research in New Zealand by every means in the council’s power, and valuable results are anticipated. '■ _ The officers of the council, who will constitute an executive committee with headquarters in Wellington, were elected as follows:—President, Professor Hunter: vice-president, Mr Milner; secretary, Professor Gould. It was decided to call for applications for the position of executive officer, whose functions will be to carry out research and co-ordinate the various research activities under the auspices of the council. This • officer’s salary was fixed at £I,OOO a year with travelling expenses; the first appointment to be for a, period of three years. The council hopes that applications will bo received hot later than 'March 12, when the council will , proceed to make' an aixpointmeut. Preliminary steps were also taken in the formation of local research branches with headquarters in the fopr main : centres.
