WAIHI MINE CAGE SMASH
CLAIMS BY INJURED MEN OVER £4.000 (Per Unitkh Pkess Association.] AA’AJHI, November 21). Nine of the thirteen men who were injured when the cage at No. 2 shaft in which they wore being lowered to work in the Waihi mine on July 2b broke away and fell more than I,oooft claimed in special and general damages more than £4,000 from the AVaihi Gold Mining Company in the Wailii Warden's Court to-day. 'The case was heard before Air F. AA 7 . Platts, warden, and five assessors. Air P. J. O’Regan, who appeared for the plain bill’s, in the course of his address suggested to the court that the men were entitled to consideration for the nervous strain to which they had been subjected, apart from bodily injuries. Air H. P. Richmond, for the defendant company, admitted liability for damages, but asked the court not to he swayed by sentiment in assessing the amount. The accident had been a spectacular one, but Hie court should not lie influenced hv that fact.
