SAINTLY WOMEN
THE POPE'S HOMILY PLEA FOR MODESTY AND DIGNITY PreM Association—By Telegraphy-Copyright. LONDON, November 15. (Received November 16, at 12.40 p.m.) A Vatican City message states that the Pope denounced the presence of women at the Carnera-Uzcudun fight during an address on the canonisation of three women saints. His Holiness condemned participation by women in any violent sport, and said the example of the women saints was much needed to-day.' He regretted that young Christian girls were accepting invitations to exhibitions at which it was impossible to preserve God’s gifts of modesty, dignity, and grace. His Holiness denounced the “ immodest costumes ” worn in sport, and recalled the example of St. Perpetua, an early martyr, who was thrown into a wild bull arena and was repeatedly tossed and gored. Even in death’s agony she was not concerned with her wounds, but wrapped her torn clothing around her body so as not to offend modesty. •
