YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION
On Thursday evening a girls’ service was held in the Y.W.C.A. hall, the occasion being the graduation of senior girl citizens to the membership of clubs of the senior department of the Y.W.C.A. They were welcomed by Mrs Mackie Begg (Y.W.C.A. president), Mrs J. Malcolm (chairman of the senior department), and Miss Mai Ellis (president of the senior clubs). During the service Frances M'Namara was also dedicated chief girl Citizen for the forthcoming year. A short talk was given by Mrs H. D. Skinner on the vistas opening before young girls and the ways in which girl citizenship helped to equip them to meet the challenge of life. At the. conclusion of the service a citizen song contest was held, Mrs Little kindly acting as judge. The girls also took this opportunity of welcoming the new chairman of the girls' work department (Mrs T. Somerville)' and thanking the retiring chairman for her services, presenting both with beautiful flowers. Isabel Leather was also presented with a bouquet by her fellowgirl citizens in appreciation of the cheerful and whole-hearted manner in which she had discharged the exacting duties of her position during the year. The girl citizens were then entertained at supper by members of the senior clubs. The girl citizen . annual sports day was held on November 11 at the Woodhaugh Gardens. There was a good: attendance, and the events were Commenced with everyone in high spirits and full of enthusiasm. The weather soon changed, unfortunately, which necessitated the completing of _ the events in the Y.W.C.A. gymnasium. The results are as follow: — Hoop relay.—Aroha section 1, Rawhiti section 2. Spartan Heart 1, Rawhiti 2, Aroha 3. Crocodile. —Aroha 1, Rawhiti 2, Argonauts 3. • Spry ball. —Argonauts 1, Spartan Heart 2, Rawhiti 3. Line ball.—Aroha 1, Argonauts 2, Spartan Heart 3. Circle ball.—Aroha 1, Argonauts 2, Spartan Heart 3. Three-legged.—Aroha 1, Torchbearers 2, Argonauts 3. Thread needle. —Torchbearers 1, Argonauts 2, Aroha 3. Wheelbarrow. —Aroha 1, Rawhiti 2, Argonauts 3. Skipping.—Aroha 1, Spartan Heart 2, Argonauts 3 . , 75 Yards Flat.—Rawhiti 1, Aroha 2, Spartan .Heart 3. Egg and spoon.—Argonauts 1, Aroha 2. Argonauts 3. Sack. —Haeremai 1, Spartan Heart 2. ~ Obstacle. —Explorers 1, Haeremai 2, Aroha and Argonauts 3. The Aroha section were the champions with 55 points, the Argonauts second with 30 point's, and the Rawhiti third with 25 points. The challenge sports shield will be presented at the final citizen function on December 16. The girl citizens of the Y.W.C.A, represent a very live movement, introducing girls to what is worth while in life. They are now inviting every girl who is looking for health, fun, knowledge, and companionship to join the summer activities. Tennis, swimming, cricket, tramps every Saturday, and last, but not least, the camp, which will be at Hampden from December 26 to January 6. This is open to all girls desiring to fit themselves for next year’s work.
