CAVERSHAM RATEPAYERS

EIGHTH ANNUAL MEETING On Tuesday night the eighth annual meeting of the Caversham .Ratepayers’ Association was held in the local Methodist Sunday School Hall. Mr H. H. Milne presided over a moderate attendance of members and residents of the district. Jn opening the meeting the Chairman referred to the lack of interest residents were taking in the association, which was doing really good work for the benefit of the district. ! Speaking to the report and balancesheet. the Chairman referred to the state of Corstorphino road since the recent storm, and hoped the council would take immediate steps to have it put in order. Further, in view of the failure of the drains to cope with the storm water, that the proposed drainage scheme improvements be put in hand. Another member referred to the children's playground, remarking that the grass was being cut in a very erratic manner. . It was suggested that the incoming committee should take steps in an endeavour to have the Caversham reserve put in order. The election of office-bearers resulted: —President, Mr H. H. Milne; vicepresident, Mr F. C. James; secretarytreasurer, Mr W, L. Brown; committee —Mr G. Barrowclough, Mr J. Robertson. Mr S. Marquet, Mr F. Hill, Mr J. APCrackcn, Mr C. L. M‘Keich. and Mr T. Thomson. The Chairman then formally moved the adoption of the report and balancesheet. and the motion was carried unanimously. The annual report stated that the association had experienced a heavy blow this year by the death of Sir Thomas K. Sidey. Sir Thomas, who had been a member of the association since its inception, took a keen interest in its work and was always ready with sound and valuable advice. His financial assistance helped in no small measure to expand the activities of the association. His passing was recorded in fitting manner in the minute book of the association. Amongst the more important improvements carried out was the tar-sealing of Valley road and the rounding off of the corner of the South road above Cole street, and the executive was particularly pleased to record that the efforts of the previous committee were carried to a successful conclusion during the. past year. Another important. work was the improvement in the water supply to the high levels. Since the completion of the work no complaints of shortage of water had been received. Extra lighting was installed in several localities, and a number of minor repairs and improvements were effected in various parts of the district. Numerous suggested improvements were refused by the City Council on the score of there being insufficient funds available. Amongst these were the children’s playground, which was the subject of an unsuccessful petition to the council during the year. I in-, provemenfs to Corstorphine. road were urged upon the City Council, but. nothing of a permanent nature was done. The suggested improvements were certainly justified, as was proved by the damage done by the water during the recent heavy rains. The executive was also trying to convince the City Council of the need for the purchase of a property in Marion street opposite the Presbyterian Church. This was one of the most dangerous corners in the city, and unless something was done to make it safe there was certain to lie a serious accident sooner or later. The reserve at fhe back of the station was still in a very bad condition, and the executive suggested to the annual meeting to discuss this matter with a view to sending a constructive protest to the council.
