ATHLETIC SEASON OPENED

CSNTHE'S CREDITABLE INITIAL i FIXTURE FAIR FIELDS ADMIRABLY CONTROLLED From every point of view the first sports meeting of the new season, held by the Otago Centre of the Amateur Athletic Association at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon, was a successful and highly creditable fixture; m fact, tnc manner in which it was staged would have done credit to the officials if the meeting had been one much later on in the year, instead of only their initial effort. Twenty-one events were run off to schedule, and a couple of hours of splendid athletic sports were pleasantly spent by a fair muster of interested spectators. 'The meeting merited much better support, and it would probably have had it if the weather had not been so threatening. Big spots of rain fell in the early stages, but later the day cleared, and but for a cold and steady southerly wind conditions were good. The track was in perfect order. Seventeen runners appeared for the biggest event of the day, the mile handicap, although the remainder of the fields were somewhat disappointing. In the mile event the limit men had the race “ in the bag ” from the start. The back-markers did not have a look in. There was a particularly exciting finish, there being a dead heat for first place in the fair time of 4min 36 3-ssec. The wind noticeably affected the competitors iu the back stretch. Two thrilling relay races were competed—one by five secondary school teams and the other by twelve club teams. In the former the Otago Boys’ High School representatives won over 440yds by half the length of the straight, a good performance. The University Club’s No. 2 team won the interclub relay, which was fast and keenly contested. Some fairly sound efforts were established by the small band of field performers. The feature of the cycling events was the prominence of a new rider, M. Paterson, who secured two firsts and a third in finals, as well as a first and a second in heats. Liberal handicaps assisted him, but he rode well, and his final sprints were always well timed and strong. Eight riders started in the principal race, the three-mile, which Was an easy “ go ” for the middlemarkers. The veteran of the track, J. Fogarty, chased the field from scratch all the way, but could not make up the handicap. Use of a radio amplifier was made for the announcement of results and other details of the events, and this kept the spectators well in touch with what transpired on the tracks and field.
