The bus struck a patch of bad road, and the conductor, thrown off his balance, landed on a not too young woman’s lap. A violent argument terminated by the conductor demanding his opponent’s fare. “ New street,” she snapped, tendering a coin. “Single?” asked the conductor. “ Yes.” The conductor looked the woman up and down maliciously. “ H’m,” ho murmured as a parting shot, “ I’m not surprised.” “But, sir,” proudly declared the old lag in the dock after a lengthy appeal to tho magistrate, “ You can’t send me to prison; I’ve got one of the best criminal records in the country 1”.
