OTAGO'S EASY WIN NORTH OTAGO GEATEN IYI TO 1 A representative men’s hockey match between Otago and North Otago was played at Oval No. 1 on Saturday afternoon in perfect weather. The ground was in good order. Otago took the advantage right from the start, and were on top practically all the way to win by 9 goals to 1. Otago played well as a team, and their combination, tackling, and penetration proved too much for the North Otago players. The teams were:— Otago.—H. Pickup, J. Harris, C. Belfield, J. M'Haffie, D. Ward. D. Gurr, 0. Dey, A. Baxter, B. Rennick, W. Martin, G. Botting. North Otago.—J. Frew, R. Arnott, C. Brain, J. Wilson, E. Brown, D. M'Gillivnay, L. Clark, D. Taylor, B. Blair, J. Clark, L. Blair. During the first few minutes of the game Otago set up an attack, and the ball was sent out to M'Haffie, who had an unsuccessful shot. They kept up the pressure, and Dey, on the right wing, swept the ball across well to Botting, who scored from an awkward angle. Otago 1, North Otago 0. Otago continued to attack, and took the ball to the North Otago circle, where, after some tight play, Martin scored the second goal. Otago 2, North Otago 0. From the bully play hung round midfield for a time until a smart piece of passing between Martin and Botting saw the game shift once again to North Otago’s circle, where Baxter got. offside while in a good position, and Rennick shot past from the resultant play. North Otago then went away in a likely-looking movement, but they were pulled up for a kick, and Otago set up another attack, which was spoiled by off-side play.- They kept up the pressure, however, and Baxter had an unsuccessful shot at goal, soon after which he took a good pass from the left and scored. Otago 3, North Otago 0. Following the bully L. Blair led a North Otago rally into Otago’s territory, but the visitors were checked, and Otago was away again. When in a favourable position Bax.ter shot, and, although the ball found the net, he was pulled up for sticks, but soon afterwards Rennick created a good opening for Baxter to score again. Blair went astray, and before long Otago were back again at North Otago’s goal, where Baxter scored. Otago 6, North Otago 0. After another Otago rush the visitors went away in a likely-looking passing movement, but they were pulled up for obstruction, and play was in midfield when half-time was called. The second spell opened with fairly even play until Otago again set up an attack which culminated in Baxter finding the net once more. O.tago 7, North Otago 0. A minute later, with the home team clustering round the visitors’ goal, Baxter made a- smart opening for Rennick to score. Otago 8, North Otago 0. Play then remained in midfield for some time until ; B. Blair secured and went away in a good solo effort which was checked fay the Otago backs. The visitors were now brightening up to some extent, and the forwards led several movements into Otago territory. They were rewarded, however, when, after a good movement, Taylor scored their first goal.
